Today’s Lube Tip: Off Season Storage
Originally e-mailed on March 5, 2007, targeted specifically toward Augers, but applies to all 2- and 4- stroke engines.
It’s hard to think about, especially with such a storm that just came through, but we’re not far from the end of ice fishing season.
Most people just put up their augers and other engines for months of storage while doing nothing to protect it for the off season, and for some, you have no trouble, but for many you have start-up problems at the beginning of the next season.
But by spending a little extra time when you put it up, you will have a much happier experience getting started next season. Gasoline begins to deteriorate (lose octane and varnish) beginning in as little as 30 to 45 days. Petroleum based 2-cycle oils and many other brands of synthetic 2-cycle oils provide no protection. They can actually separate and deteriorate themselves. With the use AMSOIL Saber Professional 2-cycle oil many have found their gas ready to go the next season.
For additional gasoline protection also use AMSOIL Gasoline Stabilizer, providing up to 18 month storage protection for gasoline, in both 2 and 4 cycle engines. You use just 1 ounce to 2.5 gallons of gasoline. AMSOIL product code AST-BF for a 16-oz bottle.
For complete protection, Fog your engine using AMSOIL Fogging Oil. (How to use: remove air filter or intake housing so you can spray direct into the carburetor or intake. With the engine running at fast idle spray for 10 seconds. Shut engine off, remove spark plug(s), and spray in each cylinder for an additional 5 seconds. Install new spark plug(s), and put your machine away for the season (store in the position recommended by your manufacturer). Next season, just crank it and enjoy.
